My Take On Social Networking Etiquette For The Entreprenuer

Within the clouds there are many "rules" about the proper way to utilize social networking sites, written by many self-proclaimed social media experts. I take a "Keep it Simple" approach...."Use Common Sense!"

While I do find it true, that, common sense is often a very uncommon trait, everyone that utilizes social networking, can, at the very least, try to use it.

My common sense tells me NOT to:

Figuratively speaking, "beat people to death with nonstop ads for my business"
Make racial slurs, disparaging remarks or derogatory comments online or offline
Comment on someone else's post trying to cleverly "steal" their client or business
Add a "friend" unless we have a high number of friends in common
Join causes, groups or become a "fan" unless I truly believe in the cause or am really a fan
Give Mafia Wars, Mobsters, Yoville or any other time-wasting application control of my wall posts
Use an IM as a vehicle for an unsolicited sales pitch
Format my personal profile exclusively as an advertisement for my business

On the other hand, my common sense tells me TO:

Engage in conversations online
Go ahead and promote my business once in awhile
Post interesting links and articles
Add "friends" that I have met
"Hide" posts from friends that are offensive or "Delete" the friend that posts offensive material if it is an ongoing problem
Be welcoming, honest and maintain integrity while online
Offer help via a "Direct Message" when an opportunity arises
Create a "Fan Page" for the promotion of my business

These are just my thoughts on how to use proper etiquette when using social networking sites as an entreprenuer.

Practicing What Has Been Preached

We have all heard that blogging is necessarry to online success. I have personally been resistant to blogging for a very long time because of the daily commitment to the process. What I have come to realize is that with Twitter, FB and the many, many other Social Networking Sites, I am blogging daily anyways. So I am now adding this, the "official blog" to my collection of puzzle pieces which will ultimately create the comprehensive online"Big Picture".
